William Skeng – Visit Me
‘Visit Me’ is – we think – the only William Skeng track on the internet. It’s an old alias of Sharp Veins, and ‘Visit Me’ was featured on the first Boxed compilation with a load of other great grime tunes. The track samples the Changing Faces song of the same name, so stick this one on and get lost in the gorgeous piano riff and perfectly tuned down samples.
Kid D – Still Loving You
This list wouldn’t be worth its salt without Kid D, who seems to make tracks with the efficiency of RoboCop. If you love R&G – his Bandcamp page will be a dream – because there are a goldmine of tracks waiting to be heard. We plumped for ‘Still Loving You’ gets the blood pumping with a truly fervent string riff.
Grace – Ends
Another one from the Pear Drops crew. ‘Ends’ is punchy – less focused on the gloss of previous tracks – but still coming with plenty of tears-in-the-club melodies, alongside some experimental sounding bits to boot.
Lemzly Dale & Jammz – Distant Dreams
Another modern R&G bit, sample master Lemzly Dale teaming up with the ever on-point Jammz for some gazing-into-your-lovers eyes grime. It’s a dream to hear these two on production together – if you don’t believe us – go and listen to Lemzly Dale’s edition of #SampleDat, he provided the tools for a really memorable show. Anyway – this one’s a sugar rush, floating out the speakers with all sorts of alluring melodies.
Wiley – She’s A Rider
Wiley’s dabbled in his fair bit of R&G, ‘She’s A Rider’ taken from Tunnel Vision Vol.1. He’s shouting out a real keeper on this one – so if you whip ‘She’s A Rider’ out at just the right time – your special someone might give you a night you’ll never forget.
Katie Pearl – What Time It Is
The list started with a pioneer, so it’s only right we finish with one. Katie Pearl is R&G royalty, arguably pre-empting the ‘Cut 4 Me’ era Kelela by about ten years. ‘What Time It Is’ is perhaps the quintessential R&G track: booming vocals and a great story finished off with a beat that effortlessly blends melody with grime’s harder edges. The track is taken from Davinche’s album “Make It Official” and the beat is originally ‘Ghetto Kyote’ by Treble Clef. ‘What Time It Is’ features some cutting lyrics, so if you’ve been dumped this Valentines Day, you can belt this one out in your room to ease the pain a little
